As a father being told that my unborn daughter was going to have that bonus chromosome scared the crap out me...and I'm a paratrooper, we're not supposed to be scared of anything. The amount of knowledge I did not posses about DS was what truly scared me. However the amount of love and support we received from or family, church and local DS community was overwhelming. It gave me the courage to prepare for what lied ahead. Christmas day 2023 she arrived, we spent countless days in the NICU and CICU going through multiple heart surgeries and crying countless tears of both sadness and joy. Along the way I learned several things, the most important being love of family and Jesus are truly what make life worth living. Humor and understanding make it fun.
My daughter now a year old is amazing! She makes us laugh daily, and fills our home with love. Do I wish she didn't have DS? Yes! but for her sake, not mine. I could not love that little peanut any more if I tried and I will never let her think that she cannot do something because of DS.
Dealing with others seems to be more of an issue. I have noticed that nobody knows how to react or what to say when you tell them your child has DS. That is until my Army buddies found out, the amount of supportive...yet abrasive comments from them really helped me to see what I needed as a father. It wasn't pity or a hug, I didn't need someone apologizing for my daughters diagnosis. What I needed was the kind of support that fellow paratroopers give, sarcasm... in a loving and motivational way. The kind of support that makes you want to do better and push through no matter the obstacle. And so Downsy Dad was born. I love my daughter and will support her 100% of the time, but I will not hang my head or apologize for her condition. I will however laugh with her and push her to be the best version of herself, always. So now you know my story and my drive to bring some laughter into a otherwise somber reality. I hope some of our designs offend you, some of them make you laugh but most of all I hope they make you see that humor and understanding are what will make this "difference" in our children, not so different.
We are also a non profit, all proceeds will go to our local DS Association, The Ronald McDonald House and Levine's Children hospital. Without the support of these wonderful organizations we would have been lost. Thank you.
